The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
