The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
